Beyond the Ordinary

What Happened
HC Nr. 4 was all about sustainability and social impact looking beyond our businesses and thinking about the wider effect we have on people and communities. For this one, Team Phoenix chose to focus on Anya's dance business, BollyFusion. Anya runs weekly dance classes and we made the case for how her business contributes to something much bigger than just dance community health, wellbeing, and keeping people active. It was a topic we all genuinely connected with, and that came through in the presentation.

What I Learned
This HC opened my eyes to a broader definition of sustainability than I had previously considered. When most people think about sustainability, they think about recycling, carbon footprints and environmental impact. But Anya's business reminded me that social sustainability — the idea of building communities that can thrive long term — is equally important. West (2012) argues that effective teams look beyond their immediate goals and consider the wider impact of their work on the people around them. BollyFusion does exactly this every single week.
Tjosvold et al. (2004) highlight that teams which engage with challenges beyond their own immediate interests develop a deeper sense of shared purpose and collective responsibility. Preparing this presentation as a team pushed us to think critically about what our individual businesses contribute to the world — not just financially, but socially. It was a valuable exercise in ethical entrepreneurship.
The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) provided a useful framework for understanding BollyFusion's impact. Anya's business aligns directly with SDG 3 Good Health and Wellbeing by encouraging physical activity and community connection. It also connects to SDG 11 Sustainable Communities by creating a local space where people of all backgrounds can come together through dance and culture. Seeing our own businesses through the lens of the SDGs was a perspective shift I hadn't expected but genuinely valued.

Moving Forward
HC Nr. 4 genuinely shifted how I think about entrepreneurship. It's not just about building something profitable — it's about building something that means something. Every business has the potential to create impact beyond its bottom line, and this HC reminded me to keep asking myself what that impact looks like for RILAIDITT. That's a question I'll carry long after this programme ends.
